圣诞节快乐~圣诞节知识知多少？打开今日欢乐！

每年公历的12月25日是圣诞节（Christmas Day），而前一天（12月24日）的晚上，不是圣诞节，而是“平安夜”，英文叫：Christmas Eve，eve 就是“前夕、前夜”的意思。对于西方国家的人而言，过圣诞就是他们的“过年”了；对信仰基督的人而言，这是他们一年中最重要的日子，是纪念主耶稣诞生的日子；而对于没有宗教信仰的中国人而言，也喜欢过圣诞节，因为大街小巷浓厚的圣诞氛围，会让大家觉得很开心。
作为一个英语学习者，过圣诞的正确姿势，就是了解和掌握以下跟“圣诞节”有关的概念：
圣诞节 Christmas
其实 Christmas 是由两个部分构成的：Christ 和 mas。Christ指“基督”，而 mas源自于Mass，即“弥撒”。所以“圣诞节（Christmas）就是“基督弥撒”的意思，以纪念耶稣的降生。
“弥撒”是天主教的一种仪式，非常正规，有一套十分严谨的流程，包括圣歌、读经、讲道。这种仪式在基督教里，叫“礼拜”，但不如“弥撒”这么讲究仪式。基督教里的“礼拜”注重的是祈祷和讲道。
“做礼拜”在英语中没有特定的词，一般就是 go to the church，或则叫 to worship。
Xmas

Xmas 这个词是在圣诞节期间，大家在英文的邮件、印刷品、报纸标题中看到的一个词。Xmas 实际上是 Christmas 的缩写，X 是 Christ的谐音，Xmas 要比Christmas更简洁。因此，在一些须要节省篇幅的地方，Xmas 比 Christmas 更有优势。
其实 Xmas 这个词可以追溯到1100年，当时，X就一直用来代表Christ（基督）。当时Christianity（基督教），可以写成Xianity。还有一说，认为Xmas中的X出自Christ的希腊语对应词的首字母--X，这就使得一些人认为这里的X象征十字架。
但大家请注意，Xmas是非正规用语，在正式场合，还是应该写成 Christmas。
圣诞老人 Santa Claus

关于圣诞老人的说法，有两种：英国人的说法为 Christmas Father，美国人的说法为 Santa Claus。
英国人的说法我们很好理解，那么美国人的 Santa Claus是怎么来的？其实，圣诞老人的形象来自于一位欧洲的主教，叫“St. Nicholas”--圣·尼古拉斯（这里 St.的全称为 Saint，就是信奉基督的“圣徒”之意），相传他一生做了很多善事，总是悄悄地帮助村子里的穷人。
St. Nicholas在荷兰语中的发音为“Sinterklaas”，可能是某个荷兰人把圣·尼古拉斯的故事带到美国，根据美音中的发音规律，慢慢就演化出了“Santa Claus”这个家喻户晓的名字。
圣诞树 Christmas tree

根据最靠谱的记录，圣诞树（Christmas tree）起源于德国，后在世界范围内流行起来。装点圣诞树成为庆祝圣诞节最有名的传统之一。
据说德国的传教士尼古斯在8世纪用“枞树”（即冷杉树）供奉圣婴。
随后，德国人把12月24日作为亚当和夏娃的节日，在家放上象征“伊甸园”（Garden of Eden）的“乐园树”，在上面挂上代表“圣饼”的小甜饼，象征“赎罪”（atonement），还点上蜡烛（candle），挂上金属片（tinsel），以庆祝耶稣的降生为人们夺回乐园。
到了16世纪，德国的宗教改革者马丁·路德（Martin Luther）在枞树上放置点燃的蜡烛，使它看起来像引导人们到伯利恒的星光。后来人们用圣诞树上的电灯泡代替蜡烛。（《圣经》记载了东方的三位博士，依靠天上的星光，找到了在伯利恒一个马厩里出生的小耶稣。）
姜饼 Gingerbread

“姜饼”的单词叫 Gingerbread，它是一个合成词。虽然该词里面有bread（面包），但跟松软的面包没啥关系，口感上偏向于硬硬的饼干。
在欧洲中世纪十字军东征（Crusade）的时候，“姜（ginger）”是一种名贵的香料。把姜做到小糕点、小饼干里去，既能增加风味，又有驱寒的功效。但当时的人们只舍得在圣诞节这样重要的节庆中使用。久而久之，姜饼便成了与圣诞节挂钩的点心。
在被赋予了节日的含义之后，姜饼便被有创意的人们做成了各式各样的的形状，有小人儿、小动物、星星、拐杖、手套、风车、圣诞帽、圣诞树形象等等，甚至还能做成复杂的“姜饼屋（Gingerbread House）”。
圣诞袜 Christmas Stocking

首先区别一下stocking 和 sock。sock指“短袜”，而 stockings 指“长筒袜”。圣诞袜一般就是像上图这样的长筒袜。
每年平安夜时，西方的父母都会在他们孩子的床头放一只 Christmas Stocking，告诉他们圣诞老人会往里装礼物。第二天起床的时候，孩子们就会在圣诞袜里找到礼物，这也是他们最开心、幸福的一刻。
虽然孩子长大后知道并没有什么圣诞老人，但这样美好的习俗就这样一代代地传承下来了。
圣诞快乐 Merry Christmas
很多人可能会有疑问，为什么“圣诞快乐”要用 Merry Christmas，而不是 Happy Christmas 呢？
其实，在英国、爱尔兰地区，Happy Christmas 和 Merry Christmas 都有人用，只不过美国人都会用 Merry Christmas，使这样的表达更为常见。
merry 这个词在英文中的含义一直是 pleasant（愉悦的），但1843年狄更斯的作品--《圣诞颂歌》（A Christmas Carol），让merry具备了“（因喝酒而）微醉”的意思。比如英文中就有名言：Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die. 这句话的含义是“吃吧、喝吧、放纵吧，明天我们都会死”，实际上就是“人生苦短、及时行乐”。我个人觉得 Merry Christmas 的祝福更能代表大家劳累一年，想在圣诞节期间放松一下的心情。
因 Merry Christmas 这样的说法带有“放纵”的含义，这一点引起了包括伊丽莎白二世在内的部分人的不满，以至于有些人还是坚持用 Happy Christmas。比如哈利波特系列电影的第三集，赫敏就对哈利说 Happy Christmas
