In a sense, Easter back then was a micro-fashion-week, but with a church aisle instead of a catwalk.
Easter Fashion really took off in the 1880s however, with the beginning of the New York Easter Parade. While parades had always been a part of Easter in the form of religious processions, New York saw the emergence of a fashion defilée as people spontaneously took to the streets and marched down Fifth Avenue.
It grew so large that it inspired a legendary Hollywood movie: the famous 1948 Easter Parade musical featuring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire.
While the film itself was quite enjoyable, the most memorable item was without a doubt the fashion hidden within - and specifically Garland’s Easter bonnet. Look at the majesty of it – it’s very rare indeed to see such dazzling headwear today.
Surprisingly, Easter bonnets are actually a fairly recent invention. Before 1933, and the classic song ‘Easter Parade’, they were a secondary consideration at best. In the latter part of the century however, they became the veritable forefront of Easter fashion.
The concept is a simple one: an Easter bonnet should be as dazzling as possible, and include one or more of the following Easter attributes:
- Flowers– to both symbolize the Spring and echo the time when churches were decked out in flowers for Easter
- Pastel Colors: Pink, light blue, light yellow… all the colors you would imagine on Easter Eggs are more than appropriate for an Easter bonnet!
- Feathers: While not the most popular choice nowadays, feathers used to be the marking distinction of the most elaborate Easter bonnets. Ostrich feathers were the go-to solution, both for their volume and elegance.
This tradition continues to live on today, and not only with the more devout of celebrities. For example, in 2018 Nicole Kidman was caught sporting the most beautiful of Easter bonnets by Valentino:
So if you really want to celebrate Easter in high fashion, an Easter bonnet is a must-have. Step number one to the perfect Easter outfit? Go find the perfect hat.
But of course, the bonnet itself is but the start. One must also spend time finding the right clothes to match such a glorious capital accessory. Thankfully, the guidelines for this are just as simple, and as closely related to the history of Easter.
The most important thing to remember is that Easter is about celebrating rebirth – both of Christ and of Nature, through the arrival of Spring. As of such, all colors chosen should be pure and soft - think white or pastel. Black, brown and radiant colors should be avoided at all costs.
When considering pastel, it’s also a good idea to add in basic geometric shapes e.g. lines or polka dots. These patterns directly call back to the designs commonly found on Easter eggs, and create a great combination. One look at such an ensemble will leave no doubt as to what holiday it’s meant for!
And finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention THE Easter trend of the past decade. While this one can create a cute and naughty effect, we would recommend choosing the occasion carefully. The Easter bunny might be a holiday favorite, but let’s not forget that Playboy has radically sexualized bunny ears. As a consequence, rather than straight up ears, like the ones Paris Hilton chose to wore this year, we would recommend a softer and more innovative approach:
